Family Caregiver Support Program

family caregiver support program in san diego countySponsored by the County of San Diego’s Aging and Independence Services (AIS), this program is part of the National Caregiver Support Program, which recognizes the critical need for training, assistance, and relief, for caregivers in a role that can last for years.

The Family Caregiver Support Program through AIS offers a seamless system of home and community-based caregiver support services in San Diego County.  Services focus on adult family caregivers of individuals, age 60 and older, in San Diego County, as well as Grandparent caregivers of minors, where the minor is a relative of the caregiver, and resides with the caregiver, in San Diego County.

Family Caregiver Support Program services include:

  • Assistance to caregivers through contracted providers
  • Comprehensive assessment
  • Care management
  • Professionally administered support groups and counseling
  • Caregiver skills training
  • Respite care
  • Personal care services
  • Homemaker services
  • Chore services
  • Home-delivered meals (specialized diets)
  • Legal services
  • Adult day care services
  • Home-delivered meals
  • Grandparent caregiver support
  • Outreach and education

Oftentimes, support services only focus on the patient or aging parent/family member. With this unique program, the caregiver – rather than the care receiver - is the client in the Family Caregiver Support Program.

Costs may vary as service providers affiliated with the AIS Family Caregiver Support Program may operate under a suggested contribution/sliding-scale fee. More information can be obtained as follows:

    Our mission is to provide our community with free respite care from loving intergenerational volunteers. Legacy Corps provides free respite services to caregivers and their loved ones who have early stages of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s, and/or debilitating aging challenges. Our volunteers come from all walks of life; college students, teens, actively employed, and retirees. All of our volunteers, both youth and adults, go through an extensive training course, which includes CPR and First Aid certification, and they are thoroughly screened and must pass Department of Justice background check before they serve.
